Handa Island, Tarbet, nr. Scourie |

| Until the 1840's Handa Island had over 60 residents including it's own Queen. In 1848 the potato famine led to mass migration to Canada and it has generally been uninhanited since. The island belongs to Dr. Jean Balfour. SWT (Scottish Wildlife Trust) manage it and it is manned throughout the summer by volunteer wardens who reside in the islands small bothy for 1 week or longer. Visitors can access the island via a boat service from Tarbet, near Scourie. The are sometimes opportunities for visitors to stay in the bothie but all food etc. should be taken onto the island. Most visitors come to see Handas internationally famous sea bird colonies including puffins, guillemots, fulmar and the sometimes scary skuas! For more info please visit the sites listed below.
